Is your training productive?

Every month, GRACIEMAG endeavors to demonstrate to readers the importance of consistency in Jiu-Jitsu, of setting goals in physical conditioning and life, of breathing and eating right. But what about training in the gi? Is the practitioner really using his hours in the academy as best fit?

To help you find out what you've been doing right and wrong in training, we took a close look at the training routines of Wanderlei Silva, Rafael Mendes and Vinicius Draculino, three very distinct athletes, but with similarly successful paths.

To spice up the article, we smuggled our black belt photographer into a special class with Rickson Gracie, who would scrutinize the details of every hold taught with his students, and would give an exclusive T-shirt to whomever got everything just right. You'll find all these lessons in this month's issue.

Letters to the readers in a peculiar point of view from Abu Dhabi

I enter room 436 of Rotana Hotel at around two Saturday morning with neither a camera nor a notepad, not as a reporter, but as a friend. Renzo is stretched out on one of the beds, Cristina by his side. Also in the room are Ralph and Flávia, Sérgio Ignácio, Zé Alfredo, Cora, Ruran and Rilion.

I give him a friendly embrace and, almost faint, Renzo mutters: "Good brawl, huh?".

3rd American Cup expecting 300 kids

Sign-ups for the 3rd American Cup are into the final stretch, and this Thursday is the deadline for a discount. The names of some medal collectors have already started to show up on the americancupbjj.com website, like Carlos Diego (Amazonas), Ryan Clark (Megaton), Carlos Melo, Garth Taylor and Nathan Mendelsohn, all from the team of event promoter Claudio França.

"The favorites are popping up and this week of the final stretch a lot more will appear. You just have to keep an eye on the site, since we're updating twice a day," recounts Claudio. "So far what stands out is the number of kids – last year we had more than 200 in the kids division, and this year we expect 300 will be fighting on the first day, Saturday. It will be a big party; all competitors will be given a copy of GRACIEMAG; Sambazon açaí and Silvio's BBQ will be there."

The event will be covered by GRACIEMAG and is to be preceded by a rules seminar led by Alvaro Mansor. Check out the timetable:

NEW YORK
NY International Open last call

The NY Open returns May 1st to NY City College for the second time since its successful debut in 2009, and anyone wishing to participate better hurry, as the final deadline is April 24 at 11:59pm.

New York and its surrounding area being the hotbed for Jiu-Jitsu that it is, with Renzo Gracie Academy – last year's winning team –, Ricardo Almeida Academy, East West Combat Club and Alliance strong in the region, there will be no shortage of local talent vying for top spot on the winners' stand.

Although the athlete list is not yet available, several big names from the competition Jiu-Jitsu scene are likely to be there. With half of Alliance's winning duo, Lucas Lepri (photo), teaching in New York, it is more than likely the eternal finalist will be there for a repeat of his jaw-dropping feat from last year, when he won not only his customary lightweight division, but the absolute, as well. Sparks are also bound to fly in the super heavyweight division, with East West Combat Club's Guybson Sa living in the city.
